Supporting Someone Who Is Dealing With A Mental Health Issue

March 18 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Supporting Someone Who Is Dealing With A Mental Health Issue

1 in 3 Canadians suffer with mental health issues every year.  Do you know what to do to help someone in your life as they are trying to manage?  Would that person end up feeling supported or controlled by (and therefore be resistant to) your efforts?

Knowing how to provide the appropriate support and encouragement for a person who is living with a mental health challenge is a skill that we all need to develop, at some point in our lives.  Many people wonder if they have the time or the ability to properly help someone who is dealing with a mental health issue.  Some worry that they might make the situation worse, if they step in to help.  Most people want to be respectful of one another’s privacy and not infringe on what might be considered a personal matter. But unless we are comfortable knowing how to offer the appropriate empathy and guidance, we often become a huge part of the problem for those who are trying to cope with their own mental health concerns.

Join us for this FREE 4 session Mental Wellness Support Program (Supporting Someone Who Is Dealing With A Mental Health Issue) – offered virtually, through Zoom – Monday evenings, at 6:30pm – from February 26th to March 18th inclusive.

Learn how to recognize and respond caringly when someone in your life is dealing with a mental health concern, without ending up overly enmeshed in the situation.  Learn the difference between trying to empower or control/enable a loved one, a co-worker or a community member who might be trying to manage a mental health concern.  Develop easy-to-use strategies for ensuring that anyone with a mental health issue is connected to a network of resources that can truly help.  And become aware of the tools you need to take care of yourself, as you support someone else who may or may not accept the care you are offering.

This Support Program is being facilitated by Kim Silverthorn BA, RPC, MPCC, CT of Tacit Knowledge – and is offered in partnership with Beaumont FCSS.  Kim has over 30 years of experience as a therapist, and often works with families/agencies who want to know how to support people who are struggling with a wide variety of mental health issues.

The Supporting Someone Who Is Dealing With A Mental Health Issue Support Program is only available to Beaumont and local area residents.  Participants are welcome to attend all or just some of the sessions, as they are able (different themes will be discussed each night, so you do NOT have to attend every evening to get something helpful out of the experience).

Please contact Beaumont FCSS (780-929-1006) to register and to access the Zoom link.
