SUMMARY:Managing Disclosures of Abuse Made By Children – A Duty To Report
DESCRIPTION:There are some very specific procedures that must be followed (legally) whenever a child/youth shares a disclosure of abuse or neglect. This kind of situation can be quite stressful for the professionals who have to manage the next steps in the disclosure process\, especially when they know that Children’s Services\, Police Services and the court system are also going to become involved\, at least in some capacity. \nJoin us via Zoom\, on Thursday\, October 8th – from 12 noon to 2:00pm (MST) – for this Managing Disclosures of Abuse Made By Children – A Duty To Report Training. \nThis educational training session is designed to provide professionals who work with children in any capacity (counsellors/therapists\, teachers\, librarians\, social workers\, nurses\, doctors\, therapists\, day care workers\, ministerial workers\, etc) with an understanding of their appropriate role and the protocols involved when someone under the age of 18 discloses an incident of abuse (physical\, sexual\, emotional/mental) or neglect. \nThis Training is being facilitated by Kim Silverthorn BA\, MPCC\, CT of Tacit Knowledge. Kim is a therapist with more than 30 years of experience. She was employed directly by Children Services\, and worked in partnership with Police Services\, for more than 16 years. The information in this session is sometimes specific to Alberta legislation\, but also includes information pertaining to legislation in all other provinces/territories as well. \nRegistration for this Training is $85.00/person – this can be sent by etransfer to counsellors@tacitknows.com. (For groups of 5 or more participants who register together\, this fee is $60/person.) \nThe Training is worth 2.0 hours of Continuing Education Credits (as approved by the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association). Certificates will be available upon request\, at no additional cost. And a free cheat sheet relating to the steps to take with the Reporting Process will be made available to all participants\, after the Training has been completed. \nHave a question? Please feel free to reach out to us at counsellors@tacitknows.com.  \nWant to arrange for some Professional Development Training for Your Team?  Check our our website (under the Professional Development Tab) for some of our most frequently requested sessions or Contact us today to discuss your needs  We are always happy to create unique Trainings based on your teams needs.

SUMMARY:Preventing Burnout
DESCRIPTION:Volunteering can a rewarding and fulfilling endeavour – but it can also be exhausting and overwhelming at times.  Anyone who works with or takes care of other people understands there are risks associated from the stress and negative experiences that are absorbed throughout the process of these interactions. Compassion Fatigue (or Empathy Fatigue as it is perhaps better labelled) can lead to burnout and breakdowns in all of us. \nOn November 21st\, Tacit Knowledge will facilitate a Training Workshop for the Edmonton Area Council Girl Guides of Alberta\, to help participants recognize the early warning signs of Burnout and to know what to do to ensure that they are protected from the debilitating results. \nThis is a closed Training facilitated by Kim Silverthorn BA\, MPCC\, CT.   Kim has over 30 years of experience as a therapist\, and often works with families/agencies who are trying to effectively address the stress that exists in their lives. \nWould you like to arrange for a Workshop or some Professional Development Training for your organization or workplace team?  Check out our website (under the Professional Development Tab) for some of our most frequently requested sessions or Contact us today to discuss your needs. We are always happy to create unique Trainings based on your teams needs.

SUMMARY:Mental Wellness Hodge Podge
DESCRIPTION:Join Tacit Knowledge as we present “Mental Wellness Hodge Podge” – in partnership with ELLA (Edmonton Lifelong Learners Association).  This is a 15 hour course (1 hour each day) that will be offered via Zoom\, between January 11th to March 5th (specific dates and times to be announced).  Classes are usually offered 3 days a week (Tuesdays\, Wednesdays and Thursdays)\, for 5 weeks. \nIn this course\, we will discuss a smattering of different mental wellness topics\, including how to create a meaningful life after retirement; mental health vs mental illness (normal emotional changes vs. concerning issues\, as we age); balance and boundaries (and saying no without guilt); how to create fun and play in life after 60 (why being “sensible” is not always smart); and living with uncertainty (instead of trying to control it). There will also be some limited room made available in this course for participants to make suggestions (on the first day of class) about other topics they wish to discuss – and the appropriate content will be added to the course. \nThis course is being taught by Kim Silverthorn BA\, RPC\, MPCC\, CT – from Tacit Knowledge. Kim has over 34 years of experience as a therapist\, and often works with individuals (and organizations) who are trying to effectively address various mental wellness issues in their lives. \nTo register for this course: please contact ELLA directly – Course Offerings – Edmonton Lifelong Learners Association (ELLA).  To take a course thru ELLA\, participants become a member (for a very small fee of $25.00/yr) – bursaries ARE available if requested.  All courses are free for members. \nMore information about ELLA – The Edmonton Lifelong Learners Association emerged as part of a 1976 University of Alberta Faculty of Extension spring program designed for mature adults. From there\, a group of dedicated individuals created ELLA in 2001\, a non-profit society registered under the Province of Alberta Societies Act.  By 2002\, ELLA achieved charitable status from the Canada Revenue Agency’s Charitable Division and began to offer courses as part of a three-week spring session on the University of Alberta campus. \n\nIn 2020\, due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, ELLA switched the in-person spring session to an online session\, and members enthusiastically embraced the new technology that made this possible. Building on this positive member response\, ELLA\, in 2022\, decided to offer both a winter online session and a spring in-person session every year. That same year\, ELLA operations became independent from the University of Alberta\, although its members continued to use the University’s main campus for spring sessions.\n\n\nELLA has grown from 65 members in 2002 to approximately 1\,000 members in 2023\, all of whom continue to enjoy the benefits of lifelong learning. Our courses are taught by talented professors and others who are experts in their fields\, with many course suggestions made by members. ELLA is overseen by a volunteer board and relies on the contributions of many other volunteers to offer unique learning opportunities to members. Full membership is available for a small fee to anyone over 50 years of age\, and those under 50 can become non-voting associate members.\n
